


The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment was
founded to meet the growing environment and development needs of the Toledo
District in southern Belize. TIDE's mission is to research and monitor
Toledo's natural resources, to assist in protected areas planning and
management, and to lead the development of responsible tourism and other
environmentally sustainable economic alternatives by providing training and
support to local residents.
Current programs of TIDE include:
Co-management of the Port Honduras Marine Reserve with the Belize Fisheries Department
Co-management of the Payne's Creek National Park with the Belize Forestry Department
Private Lands Initiative: acquisition of lands to be held in perpetuity for the people of Belize
Education and Outreach: junior ranger camp, scholarship program, conservation radio program, intern training and swimming day camp
TRIGOH: Tri-national alliance for the conservation of the Gulf of Honduras Rotational Secretariat: a cooperative effort between the nations of Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras
TIDE Tours: promoting local level ecotourism to ensure profits generated stay within Toledo's communities.
